This resource covers health insurance information, how to access medical care in Kansas City, and additional support services available to international students.
Health Insurance
All F-1 and J-1 visa holders attending 91黑料网 are automatically enrolled in the upon course registration each fall and spring semester.
F-1 students on OPT and STEM OPT interested in enrolling in the medical plan must email isao@umkc.edu for a special enrollment link.

Insurance waivers
A small number of F-1 or J-1 students may be eligible for a health insurance waiver (for example, if you are sponsored by your government). Review the waiver request form to see if you meet the criteria. If you qualify, complete the form and submit it to ISAO using the Secure Document Uploader in your Pathway Student Center.

Visiting a Doctor
If this is your first time seeing a doctor in the United States, here are some tips:
- Arrive early for your first appointment to complete medical history paperwork
- Your doctor may use unfamiliar language or terms. It is okay to ask them to explain
- Do not be afraid to ask questions about your care or treatment

Off-campus resources
Use the to find a doctor, hospital, or pharmacy that accepts your insurance.
Specialists
Roo Wellness may refer you to a specialist. Do not visit a specialist without a referral.
When visiting a specialist, bring your UnitedHealthcare Student Health Insurance Plan digital insurance card. You can access your card through or the UHCSR mobile app.
Emergency services
In case of emergency, call 911.
Visit the emergency room only if your situation is a true emergency. Examples include:
- Serious bleeding or injury
- Ingestion of poison or drug overdose
- Broken bones
- Severe allergic reactions
- Any health issue that is an immediate threat to life or well-being
Emergency services can be very expensive in the United States. For non-emergency situations, contact Roo Wellness or visit an urgent care clinic.
Vision care
The UnitedHealthcare Student Health Insurance Plan does not include vision care. All students may purchase supplemental vision insurance through a UHC voluntary plan after being automatically enrolled in the medical plan. Vision plan enrollment is available to ALL students (including those on OPT and STEM OPT) ONLY at the start of the new plan year (August). Vision plan enrollment is NOT available for anyone in January.
Dental care
The UnitedHealthcare Student Health Insurance Plan does not include dental care. Students may purchase supplemental dental insurance through a UHC voluntary plan after being automatically enrolled in the medical plan. Dental plan enrollment is available to ALL students (including those on OPT and STEM OPT) at the start of the plan year (August). In January, only NEW students are eligible to enroll in the dental plan.
If you are a NEW Spring student and want to enroll in dental coverage, email isao@umkc.edu within the first two weeks of classes.
