What is Copilot?
Microsoft Copliot is an enterprise-grade AI assistant designed to help people work smarter across apps. Copilot natively integrates directly into the full suite of Microsoft products used by UM System. Copilot leverages generative artificial intelligence powered by the latest large language models and connects to Microsoft apps to provide contextual, work-grounded assistance for organizations. Copilot can perform reasoning, complete multi-step tasks, and provide content generation.
M365 Copilot's primary strength is the deep integration with the Microsoft Office suite and Microsoft M365 apps. The Copilot Pages collaboration feature offers a streamlined interface for sharing Copliot responses with other users at the University, even if they do not have a Copliot license. How to Purchase
Faculty and Staff can purchase licenses for M365 Copilot by submitting the form. Once the form is submitted, IS will obtain the necessary fiscal approvals for the purchase. Student employees are only eligible if faculty or staff are purchasing the license with a MoCode. License purchases are pro-rated quarterly.
Copilot Basic (Free)
- Included with all 91黑料网 Faculty, Staff, and Student accounts. No additional purchase is required.
- Microsoft has rebranded the free Copilot option from Copilot Chat to Copilot Basic.
- Copilot Basic is AI chat grounded in data from the web and powered by the latest large language models (LLMs).
- Quick response chat interface for general inquiries and web searches with limited capabilities in documenent summarization and generation based on input text.
- Copilot Basic does not offer the robust customization and deep integration with M365 apps available with a paid M365 Copilot subscription.
M365 Copilot Premium ($189)
- Annual paid subscription required.
- Unlimited usage. No per-interaction cost or consumable credit system.
- Chat grounded in work sources (files, meetings, emails, and chats) and priority access to capabilities like file upload and image generation, and reasoning capabilities and models.
- Access organizational data enabling richer context for tasks such as summarizing meetings, highlighting action items, generating charts, and analyzing data.
- Integration in Microsoft apps like Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, and more, with advanced skills and in-app editing.
- Comprehensive access to agents, including Analyst & Researcher advanced reasoning agents, prebuilt Microsoft agents, and custom agents grounded in your data.
All data (regardless of format) must be classified in order to determine what security measures are necessary to adequately protect the University's information assets. Be aware of what types of data you are exposing to AI tools and the potential security risks by reviewing the UM System .
The UM System Education version of Microsoft Copilot Basic and M365 Copilot Premium have been approved for DCL1 - DCL3 data. You can confirm your data is within a protected UM System workspace by looking for the green shield icon in the upper right corner of Copilot.

- M365 Copilot Premium is integrated into many Microsoft products (Outlook, Word, Teams, etc.). Features become available when signed in with your UM System account. You do not need to take additional steps to enable licensed capabilites.
- Copilot Basic is integrated with Microsoft Outlook and can be accessed from the Ribbon menu.
